Adam Sterry twice top ten in Belgium

Adam Sterry twice raced into the top ten at the Belgian round of the FIM World MX2 Motocross Championship to secure ninth overall for Kawasaki and the F&H Racing Team.

The Welshman followed up an impressive qualification with two more solid motos when GP points were on the line at the treacherous sand track of Lommel in the north-eastern corner of the country. The tortuous track and the high temperatures which greeted all competitors demanded a tactical approach to racing. Anxious not to burn himself out in the early laps Adam was a little too cautious on the opening lap to surrender a couple of positions after his best start of the weekend, but he quickly regrouped to regain eighth position at the chequered flag. The best-laid plans for race two were ruined as the rider next to Adam at the gate tried to anticipate the start and the natural tensions in such circumstances spoilt his concentration. A terrific first few laps saw Adam advance into the top ten, but he inevitably paid the penalty for the efforts and, although he could see the riders ahead of him in seventh and eighth, he simply didn't have the energy to catch them.

Adam Sterry: “With the speed I had this weekend the results could have been even better, but it’s been a decent weekend and we are taking it one step at a time; we’ve been advancing each weekend since I got back on the bike. In the first race I had a pretty good start in the top ten, but in the second one I hit the gate as someone next to me anticipated the start and it is difficult not to react also in such circumstances; I was nearly last and used so much energy in the first ten minutes to pass people that I had nothing left to catch Vlaanderen and Mewse in the last part of the race. It was a solid weekend - I'm happy with that - and something to build on again; I'm happy to be back near the front, where I belong.”

There was also an impressive debut by new F&H signing Marshal Weltin. The likeable American had only a few days to acquaint himself with the Kawasaki, and he was finally able to show his true speed as well as the reliability and speed of his KX250-F. He maintained a good pace through much of the opening moto before running out of energy in the closing laps to finish fourteenth but, learning quickly, he maintained tenth place to the chequered flag to end the day eleventh overall on his debut in green.

Marshal Weltin: “I’m very pleased with my weekend; it was a great reward after my late decision to join the F&H Racing Team midweek. In the first race I pushed too hard at the beginning of the race; Marc (De Reuver) was pretty sad as I didn’t follow the advice he gave me before the race to not to give more than 80% during the first laps and keep some energy for the final laps of the moto! When the gate dropped at the first moto I forgot everything he told me and went 100%. Second race I didn’t forget and it proved to be good advice!”
