The event opens up the second half of the FIM World MXGP Motocross Championship and should see the twenty-nine year old Belgian close considerably on the championship leader who is unable to attend after fracturing a collarbone during a midweek practice session. Desalle started the race in sixth position, advancing to third on the fifth of thirteen laps. He maintained this position to the chequered flag, content in the closing laps to conserve energy for tomorrow's points-scoring races.
Clément Desalle: « It was a pretty good day. I was sixth on the gate for the qualifying race and got a good start but for a few seconds I felt some pain on the left side of my body after Gajser pushed a few of us in the first corner and crashed. I was in sixth after a few corners but could move forward to third; I was really close to Seewer but he did his job well and closed the door. I pushed for a few laps but in this heat you feel it immediately in your body when you push too much and I had to let him go. But I’m confident, everything is under control for tomorrow!"
Tommy Searle of Bike It DRT Kawasaki qualified eighth, three positions ahead of Italian home rider Alessandro Lupino of Gebben Van Venrooy Kawasaki.
In the MX2 category Adam Sterry of the F&H Racing Team made a solid comeback from injury in twelfth position.
