More Points For Kawasaki Riders In Portugal

Kawasaki Puccetti Racing competitors Philipp Öttl and Can Öncü ended their weekend of race action at the Autodromo Internacional do Algarve with Philipp eighth in Race Two and Can tenth.

The 17-lap race took place in sunny conditions and on a basically dry track, but with some wet patches still dotted around after heavy morning rains.

Philipp had demonstrated strong pace in the wet conditions during morning warm-up but it was the few wet patches on the track that were to be his undoing in his attempt to score a podium finish.

In hitting the damp patches on the track surface Philipp lost his place in the leading group and from then on he could not get back into the pack, finishing eighth overall.

Öncü was also having to work hard to stay inside the top ten places but he won his personal duel with another rider on the last lap and finished tenth.

Philipp is now fourth in the championship rankings, with 232 points, while Can is tenth, with 127 points.

The San Juan Villicum circuit in Argentina is scheduled to host the next round of the WorldSSP championship, between 15-17 October.

Philipp Öttl, stated: “This morning we had a good warm-up in the rain taking P4, so I was happy. In the race I was in the front group but then in one lap I think I hit four wet spots and completely lost the rhythm. Then I lost the group. I was on the limit and it was difficult to find a good way forward for this track. Today we could have been closer but in one lap I threw the whole race away. I was up there, fighting, but I made too many mistakes.”

Can Öncü, stated: “For me, we can forget this race because we struggled a lot, even from the start we struggled so much. We just need to focus on the next weekend. Sometimes you can lose, sometimes you can win, this is part of the job. This was our worst weekend so we can just forget this one. I am so thankful to the team for all they do and just sorry for the race result. But they did a great job.”

Raffaele De Rosa (Orelac Racing VerdNatura Kawasaki) fell while in the leading group but recovered to finish 14th and score two points. He is now ninth overall, with 137 points.

Leonardo Taccini (Orelac Racing VerdNatura Kawasaki) no scored today as did Pedro Nuno Romero Barbosa (G.A.P. Motozoo Racing by Puccetti Kawasaki).
