Heavy crash costs Mathys Boisrame second place in Italy

A spectacular high-speed crash cost Mathys Boisrame of the F&H Kawasaki MX2 Racing Team second place in the seventh round of the FIM World MX2 Motocross Championship at Faenza in Italy.

The French youngster had raced strongly from a sixth-placed start to finish fifth in moto one on the ultra-fast hillside raceway and was really on the move in race two; edged out to eighth through the unpredictable first turn he was already up to fifth at the completion of the first full lap and, setting the fastest laps time-and-again through the early stages of the moto by using outside lines to carry tempo into the hills, he was soon third and closing fast on the leaders. At twenty minutes he took over second place in moto and overall but, with just over three laps remaining, he lost control on a steep descent and crashed out spectacularly; winded but with no lasting injuries, he was unfortunately not able to continue. Despite the second moto DNF he has advanced to fifth in the series points standings.

Mathys Boisrame: “I was riding too aggressively during the timed practice session so I was only seventh but I turned it round for racing. My first start was pretty decent and I came through to fourth at one stage but then I got arm pump and had to settle for fifth. We made some changes to the suspensions settings for the second moto and, even though my start was not so good, I had a much better feeling and came through to second. Unfortunately with three laps to go I made a mistake in a downhill; I was feeling OK but the medical staff came and wouldn’t let me take the bike again to finish the race. I’m disappointed with my mistake but nothing is broken and there’s another race here on Sunday.”

It was an unfortunate day with crashes for the entire F&H team in Italy. Mikkel Haarup, eventually third in Qualifying after leading for most of the session, was involved in a mid-air collision on the jump exiting turn two of the opening race and, although he thankfully suffered no fractured limbs, was too shaken to continue. Roan van de Moosdijk, having claimed his second pole position of the season during Qualifying, also crashed as he was already in the air and unable to miss the incident and he too was forced to pull out of the race after a couple of laps when it became evident that his bike had been damaged in the earlier incident. Sandwiched by other rivals at the first turn of race two the Dutch teenager needed just one lap to advance from seventeenth to twelfth before the rear wheel suddenly found traction and threw him into the trackside bank; rejoining the race twenty-eighth he pushed forward relentlessly for the remainder of the race, matching podium lap times, to finish thirteenth. Van de Moosdijk is now sixth in the points chase with Haarup eleventh.

Roan van de Moosdijk: “The day started pretty good with the fastest time in the timed practice but then the first moto was a repeat of last Sunday. My start was OK around eighth position, but then there was a mess in the second corner; I was already in the air, had no place to go and I landed on one of the riders. I was last and came straight back into the points but the bike had been damaged in the incident so I had to stop. In the second moto my start was similar but I went off the track during the first lap. Then I crashed again pretty hard; I was dead last when I got back in the race in last position but came back through to thirteenth. It was a difficult day, but I’m already focused on turning it round on Sunday.”

Mikkel Haarup: “I have been putting too much pressure on myself the last few weeks; I can control it in training and try to relax more but I cannot change it completely overnight. This morning I felt much better than at the weekend; I found a good flow, hit my lines and put in a lap early to earn third choice of gate but then I had a short day! I was in the top ten at the start of the first moto, but another rider ahead of me didn’t jump so I landed on him and crashed pretty hard. I’m OK this evening and happy to have no broken bones but I was still too shaken to start race two.”

The ultra-fast Faenza facility will also host the eighth round of the series on Sunday.
