Mathis Valin fourth on his return in Portugal

Kawasaki Racing Team MX2's Mathis Valin returned to race action with a stunning fourth overall in the seventh round of the FIM World MX2 Motocross Championship at Agueda in Portugal.

A series of torrential rain storms had turned the track into a quagmire and, with the lower regions of the circuit under water, the GP racing was delayed by one hour as the Infront track crew did a remarkable job to create a muddy but raceable surface. From his tenth-placed start-gate Valin launched a wide sweep through turn one to head uphill ninth in race one and was soon on the move to advance to seventh within two laps. Avoiding mistakes in the demanding conditions he had taken a solid fourth place by half-distance and held it until he drifted wide into soft dirt on the penultimate lap to sacrifice two positions and thus finish sixth. A similar start in race two again saw him initially ninth but a stunning first lap saw him move quickly forward to fifth to pressure the rider in fourth. He eventually broke down his rival's resistance but on the same lap was himself surprised by a challenge from behind to take the chequered flag fifth for fourth overall on the day.

Mathis Valin: "I wasn't expecting such good results as this was my first race since the injury so I'm very happy to finish fourth overall. In the first moto I was fourth but I made a mistake with two laps to go and crashed; I lost time to restart but sixth wasn't so bad. The track was really rough for that first moto and physically it was a tough weekend as we had less time than usual between both motos so I was delighted with fifth in race two. The team has worked on the engine and I have worked on my technique so we got good starts all weekend even though I didn't had the best gate-pick. It was a wise decision of the team for me to rest my wrist as I now have no pain. I have also had time to reflect on the first part of the season; I already had the speed but I also had too many crashes and today I showed that I have learnt to take my time and stay on two wheels."

Team Venum Bud Racing Kawasaki's Francisco Garcia recorded his third consecutive podium in European EMX250 Motocross Championship racing to maintain his challenge for the title. The Spaniard had shown his pace in the dry conditions on Saturday morning as he posted the fastest time in Free Practice and earnt third choice of gate in Timed Practice but the European riders then had to contend with the most difficult track conditions of the weekend as storms rolled in off the Atlantic just as their races went to the start each day. He rode a consistent ride to third in the first muddy moto on Saturday afternoon and showed great composure in the appalling conditions riders faced in race two to salvage the podium. Rain was running down the ruts on the hillside by the end of the race and lap times were a full minute slower than during practice so survival was the key. Sixth at the start Garcia was the only rider on the leaderboard not to fall at least once during the twenty-five-minute-plus-two-lap race and his patience was rewarded with fourth at the finish, sufficient to earn him third overall. With his main championship rivals on the top two steps of the podium he heads to his home round of the series next week third in the series standings, fourteen points shy of the red plate.

Francisco Garcia: "I am not used to conditions like this in Spain so I am glad to have finished the day on the podium with good points for the championship; I dropped a few points to the leader but the championship is long. There was so much rain today; the conditions were completely crazy and the track was getting more and more difficult every lap so I concentrated on not crashing. Now we stay focused for my home GP next weekend; I hope we will have better weather."

Bud teammate Jake Cannon was clearly not comfortable in conditions so alien to those he has ever raced in his native Australia and had to withdraw from both races after crashes. Bike It Kawasaki's Bobby Bruce had been second in the dry Timed Training and ran third in the first muddy moto on Saturday before a heavy crash left him winded. He again ran third for three laps in Sunday morning's second moto until recent sickness started to take it's toll in the exhausting conditions. However he persevered to the finish and was rewarded with eleventh place at the finish.
