Stylish Swiss Arnaud Tonus enters 2014 determined to bring the FIM MX2 Motocross World Championship title to Team CLS Kawasaki Monster Energy after misfortune cost him a shot at the title last year.
There was a certain inevitability that Arnaud would take up motocross at an early age as his father Charly was one of the leading Swiss racers in the 1980s and their home base near Geneva was the ideal location for the young Arnaud to compete both in his home country and neighbouring France. After gathering an impressive collection of titles in both countries throughout his youth career Arnaud was soon recognised as an outstanding talent and was already chosen to represent his country in the annual Motocross of Nations at the tender age of 16. His entry into the World Championship started sensationally in 2009 as he sped to victory in the qualification race at his very first GP and, although he inevitably could not maintain that level of result, he completed his rookie year with a world top 20 ranking, advancing to the top ten the following year with a podium at the final GP before taking a further step up the ladder in 2011. A serious crash on the eve of the 2012 season kept him off track for some weeks but he immediately rediscovered top ten pace on his return and again ended the series with a podium finish at the final round. Team CLS Kawasaki had maintained a careful eye on the stylish Swiss throughout his career and he had already signed to join the team for 2013 when he suffered a leg fracture in his final appearance for his previous team. The injury proved more complicated than initially feared and it soon became evident that further surgery was required if Arnaud was to display his true speed, so rider and team immediately decided to bury their 2013 title ambitions to concentrate on a full-scale assault in 2014, which will be his final year in MX2. The wisdom of this move was confirmed as Arnaud recorded a stunning double victory at the opening warm-up race in February to send a warning to his rivals that he will be the man to beat this summer.
