Marino Shares Championship Lead After Imola Podium Ride

Florian Marino (Kawasaki Intermoto Ponyexpres) took his third podium finish in three races to score third place in the 17-lap WSS race at Imola. He now shares the championship lead after four rounds, after a race in which
Kenan Sofuoglu (Kawasaki Mahi Racing Team India) was forced to retire while leading.

Many Ninja ZX-6R riders had a strong day at the Imola circuit with Patrick Jacobsen (Kawasaki Intermoto Ponyexpres) taking fourth place, his best result so far in the WSS class in his rookie season. Roberto Rolfo (Kawasaki Team Go Eleven) placed fifth and young WSS rookie Alessandro Nocco (San Carlo Puccetti Racing Kawasaki) took his first race finish at his home round, in a creditable tenth position.

Christian Gamarino (Kawasaki Team Go Eleven) and Tony Covena (Kawasaki Ponyexpres Intermoto) each finished in the points, 13th and 14th respectively. Roberto Tamburini (San Carlo Puccetti Racing Kawasaki) was unfortunate to crash out of his home race after qualifying fourth.

It was a tough day for Sofuoglu from the start as his machine was weighted on Saturday after qualifying and found to be 200 grammes underweight. A penalty from the race organisers put him on the second row of the grid instead of the front row he had taken in qualifying. His machine slowed as he led the race in complete control, and he had to stop on lap 13 after he lost forward motion. He is now ninth in the championship, with 25 points which all came as a result of his race win at the second round in Spain.

Like the Superbike class, the next outing for WSS after Imola will be Donington Park, on May 25th.

Kenan Sofuoglu: “Yesterday we had a problem after qualifying because my bike was 200 grammes underweight so I had to start from the second row. Anyway, I had just one goal today in the race, take the lead and go away from the rest. We did a very good jib with that and took a good lead. I was relaxed with that and I was not pushing. Finally, after about lap 14 the bike did not go forward anymore and I heard later it was a clutch issue. I am so sad because we have always got the possibility to win the race but something happens and we are out. I cannot say it is going well but I still have to look on things positively. Still we are fastest on track and we know this.”
